Using Xythos for Web Page
Xythos has the ability to serve basic web pages (html files) to the public. To use Xythos as a web host simply upload your html files into your Public folder or you can create a new folder in which to store your site that can be viewed by the public.
To create a publicly viewable directory:
- Open your Xythos account
- Click the New Directory icon
- Give the directory a name (keep it simple as this will be part of the URL of your web site)
- Click OK
- Within the directory listing of your new folder click the Private icon
- On the permissions page give the Public Read access to the folder by checking the box
- Select Only apply to this directory
- Click the Apply Now button (it's normal that nothing seems to happen)
- Go back to the directory listing
- The folder now is designated as Shared (
) and any files placed within it can be viewed in a browser by everyone.
Creating and publishing a home page:
- Using the web authoring tool of your choice, create an html file and name it index.html.
- Upload the index.html file into your publicly accessible folder using the Xythos web interface or WebDAV. This will be your home page.
- If you place your web files within your Public folder the URL of your home page will be: https://xythos.uiowa.edu/HawkID/public (or replace public with the name of the folder you created using the steps above).
Note: Xythos does not support FTP so you cannot publish web files directly into your Xythos account using a web publishing tool such as Dreamweaver or an FTP client such as WS-FTP.
