Configuring a Windows Computer for UI Wireless Access - Intel PROSet 9/10/11

These instructions are intended for those who have the Intel PROSet wireless access software version 9.0 or later installed on their machines. Before you begin, make sure your wireless card is inserted and that the drivers are properly installed.

To configure the Intel PROSet client for UI Wireless:

  1. Open the Intel PROSet Client window and click the Connect button in the Available Networks section.

    Intel PROSet window

  2. In the Create Wireless Profile: General Settings window:
    - Enter the Profile Name (this can be any name you like).
    - The Wireless Network Name (SSID) must be UI-Wireless-WPA2.
    - Click Next>>.

    General Settings

  3. In the Create Wireless Profile: Security Settings window:
    - Select the Enterprise Security radio dial
    - Select WPA2 - Enterprise in the Network Authentication list.
    - Select AES - CCMP for Data Encryption.
    - Check the Enable 802.1x box.
    - Select PEAP for Authentication Type.
    - Make sure that MS-CHAP v2 for Authentication Protocol is selected
    - Select Prompt each time I connect for User Credentials.
    - Enter your Hawk ID in the Roaming Identity field.
    - Click Next>>.

    Security Settings

Note: If you are the only person to use your machine, then you may enter your Hawk ID and Password in to the configuration settings and you won’t have to type it in every time. Choose Use the following in the User Credentials list and enter your information. This has the benefit of not having to sign in every time you access UI Wireless, but you have the risk of someone else accessing the network under your account.
  4. In the Step 2 of 2: PEAP Server section:
    - Select Thawte Premium Server CA from the Certificate Issuer drop down menu.
    - Check the Specify Server/Certificate Name box.
    - In Server/Certificate Name field, enter net-auth-1.its.uiowa.edu.
    - Select the Server Name must match exactly radio button.
    - Click Next>>.

    Certificate Settings

  5. Click OK to connect to the wireless network.

    Configuration Complete

  6. After the Connecting to UI-Wireless-WPA2 popup window appears, enter your Hawk ID and Password. (You do not need to include the domain) and click OK.

    Connecting window

  7. Many computers contain an expired version of the Thawte Premium Server CA certificate that will cause you to lose your connection to the UI Wireless network, due to a conflict. Remove the expired certificate to avoid this conflict. The ITS Help Desk has provided a program to automatically remove the expired certificates for you.
    - Click on the icon below to download the certificate removal program.
    - Save the file to your desktop.
    - Double-click the remcert.exe file on your desktop to run the expired certificate removal program.

    Remove Certificate icon

See the Certificate Removal instructions for more information or if you need instructions for removing the certificate manually.

  8. Reboot your laptop to complete the configuration and connect to the UI Wireless network.

Note: If the WPA2 instructions don't work try using the WEP instructions. (The UI-Wireless-WEP network will be available until June 30th, 2008.)
