File and Settings Transfer Wizard

The Windows XP Files and Settings Transfer Wizard can provide the user with a simple and efficient way to move information and settings from one computer to another, making upgrading to a new computer an easy and painless process.  The wizard can also be used to create a backup, just in case.  Just follow the steps below to see your customized settings show up on your new Windows XP computer:

1.  First, you need to make sure the two computers are connected.  You can either have them on the same network, or connect them directly by using a ‘crossover’ cable, available at most major electronics and computer stores.

2.  Next, start the wizard on your new computer by going through the Start Menu -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> File and Settings Transfer Wizard.

3.  It will tell you that you will also need to run the wizard on the old computer.  If the old PC also has Windows XP, select the option to “use the wizard from the Windows XP CD.”  You can also create a floppy disk if both machines have a floppy drive, but the CD option is the easiest.

4.  Be sure to follow the instructions that come up on the next screen.

5.  After you start the wizard on the old computer, you will have the choice of determining how your files will be saved.  You can choose a direct cable connection, via home or office network, some removable media (such as a floppy or CD-R), or just save it to a folder on your computer (to be transferred manually later).

6.  Based on the method you choose, you may get additional directions.  The next screen should let you choose what files and settings to transfer.  Remember, this is all on the old computer.  You may choose to transfer only files, only settings, or both files and settings.  You can also click a checkbox that will allow you to select a list of customized files and settings to transfer over, if you only want specific ones.

7.  Some programs require that you install them on your new computer before you transfer the settings over, or they will not transfer properly.  After clicking the Next button, it should show a list of any programs that you need to preinstall (if there are any).  Examples often include programs like Quicken, Adobe, and Realplayer.

 Install New Programs

It is important to remember that programs will not be installed by this wizard – only your settings will transfer over.

8.  After you click next, it can take some time for all of the files and settings to be transferred.  Occasionally you may run into a .dat file that cannot be transferred and displays a warning message – just click ignore.

9.  After the collection process has completed, you can go back to the new computer and select where to find the saved files and settings.  The wizard will automatically transfer the files and settings, and after a few minutes the process should be complete.
