UI Anywhere

UI Anywhere is a Virtual Private Network that provides secure access to resources located on the University of Iowa campus to locations off campus. UI Anywhere may be used anytime a University of Iowa student, faculty, or staff member is working off campus and would like to access local resources located on the University of Iowa campus.

Examples of resources located on the UI campus:

  • LIbrary resources
  • Web sites restricted to the range of IP addresses reserved for on campus use
  • Email servers

UI Anywhere will only provide security for Internet traffic that comes to University of Iowa resources. UI Anywhere is configured so that the internet browser can be directed to off campus web sites but that information will not go through the VPN, instead it will go directly through the Internet access provided by your Internet service provider.

How do I connect to UI Anywhere?

You can connect to UI Anywhere through the Web VPN web site or through the Cisco AnyConnect client. The following table illustrates the difference between the two connection methods and benefits of each.

Web VPN Browser Access

AnyConnect Installed Client Access

UI Anywhere can be accessed by directing your web browser to http://vpn.uiowa.edu.

Use your HawkID and password to log in.

Provides access to your H and L drive files, SSH servers, UI web applications, and Remote Desktop.

See the Web VPN support site for more information and instructions.

AnyConnect is a client that can be installed directly on a computer and used to connect to the VPN server.

Administrator rights are required to install the client

Provides access to applications on the computer as though you were on campus.

Click here for Cisco AnyConnect client download and installation instructions.

Which VPN method should I use?

When using another person's computer

When using a public computer

When using your personal computer/laptop from off campus

Benefits

Administrator rights aren't needed to use the VPN.

Programs don't need to be installed on public or other people's computers.

There is no need to start an internet browser to access the VPN.

If the computer is joined to the iowa domain and the AnyConnect client is started first, then the computer will function just like it was on campus.

For computers not joined to the domain, a network drive can be mapped and Outlook can be configured to function like it is on campus.

UI Anywhere for iPhone/iPod Touch

UI Anywhere can be configured for on the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch. At this time, Blackberry, Android, and Windows Mobile phones are not compatible with UI Anywhere. See the UI Anywhere Mobile Device Configuration Instructions for set up instructions (HawkID and password required for authentication to the instructions).
