Overview
In order to allow access to your local hard drives (in the computer sitting in front of you) in a Virtual Desktop session, the Virtual Desktop server has to "map" a drive to those drives so they are available while in a session. These instructions will show you how to configure the Citrix client for Java on a Macintosh. Once configured, you may save files that you create in a Virtual Desktop session (which is actually running on a server) to your local hard drive using the usual method - File | Save As. They will show up as "C$ on client (C:)", etc in the list of drives.
NOTE: The following instructions are only for mapping drives when you are using the Citrix client for Java on OS X. This client downloads and runs automatically when you log into a Virtual Desktop session from a Macintosh. If you downloaded and installed the Citrix client for Mac OS X, you will need to follow these instructions.
Instructions
-
While connected to a Virtual Desktop application via the Citrix client for Java, there should be a window titled "Client for Java Connection Center". Click on the Settings button.
-
Click on the Drive Mappings tab. To make a local drive or a folder on a local hard drive available from within a Virtual Desktop session, click Add.
-
The New Drive Mapping window will appear. Choose what drive letter you would like to assign to your drive. (It is typically best to choose a letter between C to G to avoid potential conflicts with network drives.) To choose the folder or entire drive to assign to this drive letter, click Browse. See the next two images. You should leave the default permissions for your drive as Read/Write if you want to save files back to your local hard drive.
-
In this example, the Java client will automatically make a drive C: available in the Save/Open dialogues when the user is in a Virtual Desktop session. If the users saved a document they were working on while in the Virtual Desktop session to the C: drive, it would appear on the Desktop folder of the Macintosh they are using. Click OK to save your changes.
-
When you click OK, this message will tell you that you need to disconnect and reconnect to Virtual Desktop in order for your drive to be made available for the first time.
NOTE: You may create as many mapped drives as you like, as long as none of them conflict with a drive that is already being created via a login script, etc.
