Using the Citrix Client for Java

This article applys to the following Citrix/Virtual Desktop clients:  mac_osx_small

Overview

The Citrix Client for Java enables you to connect to Virtual Desktop applications without having to actually install a client. Rather, the Java client is downloaded as a Java applet within your browser. The client offers most of the features of the other clients such as "Seamless Windows" and integration with the Virtual Desktop Web Interface. Since Java is platform independant, the Java client may be run on any operating system that has the Java Virtual Machine installed. This includes Windows, Macintosh and (though not directly supported) Linux PCs. (The Java Virtual Machine is installed by default in Mac OS X.) Since the Citrix Web Client is the preferred client for Windows, these instructions will assume you are using Mac OS X. For more information on the Citrix Client for Java, see the article "About the Citrix Client for Java".

Safari on Mac OS X is the preferred browser for connecting to Virtual Desktop using the Java Client. However, you may use Mozilla Firefox or whichever browser you would prefer. To set the Virtual Desktop Web Interface so that the Java client is used for Virtual Desktop connections, follow steps 2 - 7 on this page but instead of setting the drop-down menu in step 6 to "Native Client", set it to the "Java Client".

Connecting to Virtual Desktop Applications using the Citrix Client for Java in Mac OS X

  1. Prerequisites:
    A. To use the Java client, you must have the Java Virtual Machine installed and enabled. It is installed by default on Mac OS X.
    B. You must also have the pop-up blocker disabled in the Safari web browser or whatever browser you are using.

  2. Launch the Safari web browser on your Mac OS X machine and browse to the Virtual Desktop Web Interface at: http://virtualdesktop.uiowa.edu.

  3. When the web server sees a connection from the Safari browser, the Java Client is automatically set as default. Simply log into the Virtual Desktop Web Interface with your Hawk ID credentials:

    login

  4. When you log in, you will see all of the applications that are available to you, based on your credentials. Click on the desired application and a connection will automatically be initiated using the Citrix Client for Java, which automatically downloads and starts the connection.
