Oracle Install for Data Warehouse Access

Following are instructions for downloading, installing, and configuring Oracle for Data Warehouse access.

NOTE: You must have access to Decision Support in order to use Oracle to access the Data Warehouse. If you are not sure if you have access, contact the ITS Help Desk or check with your departmental computer support person.

  1. Open Windows Explorer and verify that you are mapped to the U drive. If you are not, go to the Start menu, choose Run, enter \\iowa\shared, and click the OK button.

  2. In Windows Explorer, access the following folder on the U drive: UIData\clientsoftware\Oracle10g.

  3. In the Oracle10g folder, double click the Standard_Setup.exe file and choose Run. As with any install, you will need to have administrative rights to the computer to complete the installation.

  4. Verify that you have access to DWPROD. Go to the Start menu, choose Control Panel, then Administrative Tools, then Data Sources (ODBC). On the ODBC Data Source Administrator window, select the System DSN tab.

  5. If DWPROD is not displayed on this tab, click the Add button. On the Create New Data Source window, scroll down and select Oracle in OraClient10g_home1, then click the Finish button. The Oracle ODBC Driver Configuration window will display.

  6. On the Oracle ODBC Driver Configuration window, enter in the following information:

    • Data Source Name - dwprod
    • Description - Data Warehouse Tables
    • TNS Service Name - dwprod.world
    • User ID - Enter your Hawk ID
  7. Oracle ODBC Driver Configuration window

  8. Click the Test Connection button to test your account. (Use your Hawk ID and Hawk ID password.)

  9. Click the OK button to close the ODBC Driver Configuration Window and click OK again to close the ODBC Data Source Administrator window.

NOTE: If this is a new computer or reformatted and you are using Microsoft Access to access your data, you will need to re-link your tables.

If you have difficulty installing or setting up this software, please contact the ITS Help Desk.
