Frequently Asked Question (FAQs)

How many installs will my student media allow?

Windows XP CDs will allow one install. Any other Microsoft product will allow two installs.

What do I do if I've used up my limited number of installs?

Some scenarios where this might happen include getting a new computer, replacing enough hardware so that Windows XP thinks you have a new system, or trying to install the software on more than one computer. In the first two scenarios, you may be eligible for an exception to the “one purchase per title” rule. Please contact the ITS Campus Software Program (its-software@uiowa.edu) for more information. All such inquiries must be made in writing.

Can I use my Microsoft Student Media after I've graduated?

Yes you can use your Microsoft Student Media after graduation. You must obtain a “perpetual license” to do so. You can obtain the license by visiting this web site. You will need to log in with your Hawk ID and password to obtain the license.

Where do I purchase software through the Microsoft Campus Agreement?

All software to be purchased through the Microsoft Campus Agreement is available at the University Bookstore located in the Iowa Memorial Union.

What do I do if I’am installing the software and it won’t accept my product key?

First verify that you have not typed it incorrectly. Verify that you have not installed the software more than your allotted number of times. If you still are having problems, please contact the ITS Help Desk at 384-HELP (4357) or its-helpdesk@uiowa.edu.

What do I do if my CDs are physically damaged?

If your Microsoft Student Media CDs are physically damaged you may receive a replacement set. Please contact the ITS Campus Software Program (its-software@uiowa.edu) for more information.

What do I do if I install the software and when I run it for the first time it asks again for the product key but will not accept it?

This most typically happens when you install Microsoft Office 2003.

  • Verify that you have not mistyped the product key.
  • Verify that you do not have any older versions of Microsoft Office Installed. If you do, go to the Control Panel under the Start menu, then choose Add/Remove Programs. Uninstall the older versions of Microsoft Office you have listed, then attempt to install the new software again.
  • Verify, by the same methods as in the step above, that you do not have any versions of Microsoft Works Suite installed on your computer. Microsoft Works Suite comes with a version of Microsoft Office Word 2003 as one of its components. This software may also cause troubles during installtion.

Please contact the ITS Help Desk at 384-HELP (4357) or its-helpdesk@uiowa.edu if you are still having difficulties.
