Software Repair and Troubleshooting Services
The following are examples common software repair and troubleshooting services the ITS Help Desk provides. In many cases these issues can be resolved over the telephone (384-HELP) or through e-mail (its-helpdesk@uiowa.edu).
- Troubleshoot and repair a network connection (wireless, Ethernet, or dial-up)
- Troubleshoot an operating system error or malfunction (both Windows and Macintosh)
- Determine if a problem lies with the hardware or software
- Remove a virus from the computer
- Remove spyware from the computer
Some computer software problems may be difficult to troubleshoot over the telephone or through e-mail. In these cases, you may be asked to bring your computer in to the Help Desk for troubleshooting (see the Drop-off Instructions for more details). Some examples include:
- Complicated virus removal
- Complicated spyware removal
- Security Certification of your computer
- Reformatting the computer (for any reason)
- A forgotten log on password in Windows 2000 or XP
- Registry editing of any kind
- Flashing your computer’s BIOS, or any other firmware flash upgrades
