ITS Announcement regarding Viruses and E-mail Attachments

Recently, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of computer viruses seen on campus.  Several of these viruses have disguised themselves as being from computer support staff. One virus in particular appeared to come from support@uiowa.edu, management@uiowa.edu, as well as several other addresses.

Departmental mailings from Information Technology Services (ITS) will NEVER contain attachments with the message.  Messages sent from ITS will be informational only and contain web links for additional instructions.  In addition, messages from ITS will never use generic signatures such as “computer support” or “IT Support.”

In order to protect yourself, you should never open an attachment you were not expecting; even from people that you know.  Viruses can easily appear to come from someone you know.

For more information on protecting yourself from computer viruses please visit the ITS Virus Center at http://helpdesk.its.uiowa.edu/virus/.

If you have questions or need assistance, please contact the ITS Help Desk.
