SAFE Support Center
SAFE
SAFE is Student Academic File space available to students at the University of Iowa. All current U of I students automatically have 100 megabytes of SAFE disk space allocated to them. SAFE can be used for academic-related file storage needs, and is easily accessible from anywhere via a web browser, through web folders, or from any of the Instructional Technology Centers (ITCs) across campus.
Why use SAFE?
There are several benefits to using your SAFE space, including:
- Your SAFE space is backed up regularly and files can be restored if you accidentally delete or overwrite them.
- You can work on a document in the residence halls or at home, save it to SAFE, then access it from an ITC to print it.
- SAFE reduces the need to carry around floppy disks, CDs, or flash drives, which can be lost or become corrupted.
- You can access your SAFE documents from anywhere in the world via the web browser interface.
Accessing Your SAFE Space
There are three ways to access your SAFE space:
-
MyFiles Basic - MyFiles Basic offers a simple web interface to your SAFE space from any web browser. Students in the IOWA domain can access their SAFE space through this simple web interface by visiting http://myfiles.uiowa.edu.
-
MyFiles Premium - MyFiles Premium provides enhanced functionality beyond the simple web interface of MyFiles Basic. This additional functionality provides a Windows Explorer-like view of your SAFE space. You can also permanently mount your SAFE space on your home computer using MyFiles Premium, which will enable you to save files directly from applications to your SAFE space, rather than saving to a temporary location and uploading the files at a later time. In order to use the MyFiles Premium interface, you must be running either Windows XP Service Pack 2 or Mac OS 10.4 (Tiger). See the MyFiles Support Center for more information.
-
ITC H: Drive - In addition to the MyFiles web interfaces, most students with a Hawk ID in the IOWA domain will have their SAFE space mounted as an H: drive on Windows computers in the ITCs. If your Hawk ID is in the IOWA domain, you can save directly to your H: drive to store files in your SAFE space. These files will then be accessible outside of the ITCs through the web using either of the MyFiles tools. See the ITC Web Site for locations, hours, software available, and more information about ITCs on campus.
Note: Students in the Medicine domain will need to use the MyFiles Premium interface to access their SAFE space. To use MyFiles Basic or the ITC H: drive interface, these students will need to contact HCIS for additional information.
See the SAFE Frequently Asked Questions for more information about SAFE.
