Windows 2000 Setup for Remote Access
To setup your Remote Access on Windows 2000, please follow the directions below:
1. On your Desktop, choose Start | Settings | Network and Dial-up Connections.
2. In the Network and Dial-up Connections window, double-click on Make New Connection.

3. In the Network Connection Wizard window, click Next to continue.
4. In the Network Connection Wizard, select "Dial-up to the Internet", and click Next to continue.

5. In the Internet Connection Wizard, select "I want to setup my Internet connection manually, or I want to connect through a local area network (LAN).", click Next to continue.

6. [Note: This step may not appear depending on your computer. If it does not show up simply go on to the next step.] In the "Setting up your Internet connection" window, choose "I connect through a phone line and modem", and click next to continue.
7. In the "Step 1 of 3 Internet account connection information" dialog box, enter the correct telephone number into the field, making sure not to enter an Area Code. Entering an Area Code could cause you to receive long distance charges from your telephone carrier. Make sure "Use Area Code and dialing rules" is deselected, click Next to continue.
Note: Customers are responsible for all charges incurred through the phone company. Please check with your local phone company to make sure that the number you are using to connect to remote access will not include additional long distance or local usage charges. Customers are responsible for all charges.
8. In the "Step 2 of 3 Internet account logon information" dialog box, provide your remote access User name and Password. These are based on your Hawk ID.
The User name is hawkid@ui
For example, if Jane Doe has jdoe as her HawkID, she types jdoe@ui as her remote access user name. The Password is your Hawk ID password, as used in the ITCs.

9. In the "Step 3 of 3 Configuring your computer" dialog box, type the Connection name: University of Iowa Remote Access, click Next to continue.

10. In the "Set Up Your Internet Mail Account" dialog box, click No, and click Next to continue.

11. You now have finished setting up your Remote Access account. If you wish to connect to the Internet now, select the connection box, and click finish. If you wish to not connect to the Internet, make sure the box is unchecked and click on Finish to complete your setup.
At this point you can connect to the Internet by launching any TCP/IP program such as Netscape or Internet Explorer.
