Mac OS 8.5 - 9.2 Setup for Remote Access
To setup your Remote Access on Mac OS 8.5 - 9.2, please follow the directions below:
1. Start from your desktop and click on the Apple in the upper-left corner. Go down to Control Panels and select Remote Access.

2. On the Remote Access Control Panel make sure the arrow next to "Setup" is pointing down. If not, click on it once to make it point down. There are 3 pieces of information that need to be entered on this screen:
- The name is hawkid@ui where hawkid should be replaced with your actual Hawk ID.
- The Password is your Hawk ID Password.
- The Number is the appropriate phone number for your area. Do NOT enter an area code, doing so could cause you to receive long distance charges from your telephone carrier. The phone numbers to use for local communities are below.
Note: Customers are responsible for all charges incurred through the phone company. Please check with your local phone company to make sure that the number you are using to connect to remote access will not include additional long distance or local usage charges. Customers are responsible for all charges.
3. Click on the RemoteAccess drop-down menu and select TCP/IP. (Note: The Remote Access Control Panel must be the active window in order to see the RemoteAccess menu.)

4. In the TCP/IP window, make sure of the following 4 settings:
- Connect via: is set to PPP.
- Configure: is set to Using PPP Server.
- Name Server Addr: is blank.
- Additional Search Domains has uiowa.edu in it.
Close out of this window and save your changes.

5. Click on the RemoteAccess drop-down menu and select Modem. (Note: The Remote Access Control Panel must be the active window in order to see the RemoteAccess menu.)

6. In the Modem window, make sure of the following 2 settings:
- Connect via: The correct port must be selected. Typically this would be the Modem Port or Internal Port, depending upon the type of modem and how it is connected.
- Modem: The correct type of modem needs to be selected. Most likely the one that is selected already is correct, but if you know for sure that you have a different modem, select one from the list that most closely matches yours.
Close out of this window and save your changes.

7. You are now ready to connect. On the Remote Access Control Panel, click the Connect button to actually make the connection.
