What is "Remote Access"?
The purpose of the ITS Remote Access Service is to facilitate your off-campus access to Internet resources for academic/work-related purposes. This service can also work for campus residents who do not have a direct connection to the campus network. The service supports 56Kb connections and full Internet protocols for web browsing.
Who is eligible for this new service?
Students - all currently enrolled students are eligible. If you have questions about your eligibility, contact the ITS Customer Information Desk at (319) 384-0800 or its-information@uiowa.edu.
Faculty/Staff - all current faculty and staff, including emeritus faculty and staff. If you have questions about your eligibility, contact the ITS Customer Information Desk at (319) 384-0800 or its-information@uiowa.edu.
Can this service replace my current Internet Service Provider?
Perhaps. The Remote Access Service is primarily for support of University of Iowa academic and work related business.
Use of the Remote Access Service, as an extension of the Campus Network, is governed by the University Acceptable Use of Information Technology Resources Policy http://www.uiowa.edu/~our/opmanual/ii/19.htm.
How do I sign up?
Students are automatically registered to use the remote access dial-in service. No registration process is required. For directions on how to setup your Remote Access connection, please see the Getting Started instructions available on the left-hand side of Remote Access Resource Center.
Faculty/Staff - Faculty and staff can sign up using the following Subscription Form. The ITS Customer Information Desk (CID) will send you an email message with the information needed to get started.
How much does it cost?
Students - There are no charges to students as long as they live in a community that has a local telephone number available (Consult our phone list)
A low-cost, long-distance access number, 1-866-759-IOWA (4692), is available for calls outside the local area. There is a usage fee of $0.10 per minute for this access. This number is available in all 50 states and Puerto Rico. International calls are not supported.

Faculty/Staff - Subscribers are charged a monthly access fee of $5.00 for local usage. The $5.00 monthly service charge occurs only if the service has been used within any given month.

How can I pay for it?
Students - the only charge that students may incur would be from using the long-distance access number , 1-866-759-IOWA (4692). The usage fee of $0.10 per minute would show up on the student's University Bill (U-bill)
Faculty/Staff - There are a couple of different ways to pay for your remote access service:
- Bill monthly service charges and long distance charges (if applicable) to your University Bill (U-bill).
- Bill monthly service charges and long distance charges (if applicable) to a departmental MFK. Complete the MFK section of the application form. You must have departmental approval for this option.
Can I use this service while I’m traveling?
Yes. You may use the 1-866-759-IOWA (4692) access number with a low, long distance charge of $0.10 per minute for this access. This number is available in all 50 states and Puerto Rico. International calls are not supported.

The configuration information is available on the Remote Access Resource Page. You can also stop by the ITS Customer Information Desk at 100 LC.
What number will I need to dial?
The appropriate phone number depends on your location. Consult our phone list to locate the correct phone number that you should use. If you do not live in one of the communities listed, check with your local telephone company to see if calling North Liberty, or any city on the list, is a local call. If not, long distance charges would apply and you would be responsible for the charges.

Are there restrictions for this service?
The restrictions for the new services are:
- You must use your HAWK ID and you aren't permitted to let anyone else use this ID and password.
- You must obey the University's Acceptable Use Policy for Information Technology http://www.uiowa.edu/~our/opmanual/ii/19.htm
- You can use the service as many hours as needed, but the service isn't intended to provide a dedicated connection to Internet. Those who abuse their accounts may have their eligibility removed or the access blocked.
- Only one connection at a time per ID
