BlackBerry Architecture
BlackBerry includes mobile devices, synchronization software, and connection protocol using the RIM (Research In Motion) operating system. BlackBerrys are a viable alternative. To support them in the most reliable manner requires bringing a BlackBerry server on campus (see the BlackBerry architecture diagram below).
ITS and University of Iowa Health Care (UIHC) are working together to explore wireless handheld device support including possible enterprise support for the BlackBerry. One of the joint projects that we are cooperating on is the possibility bringing a BlackBerry server on campus.
BlackBerries will work without this server, but at reduced functionality. The desktop connector requires that an application on your desktop be running at all times. This can cause reliability problems if the application hangs or your desktop crashes. Another method for reading your e-mail is to POP the e-mail.
