Iowa Tux

Linux is an operating system created by Linus Torvalds with the goal of creating a clone of UNIX that could run on normal PC hardware. It is maintained as "open source" software. The source code is freely available to anyone, and can be modified by anyone so long as they do not sell it for profit and they release their code to others.

Today, Linux is the poster child for open source software. Linux has become a phenomenon in the software community through the work of thousands of developers, hobbyists, and companies who spend time improving Linux. Linux is incredibly flexible and it runs on many types of hardware including the PC, Apple's Macintosh, Compaq's Alpha, Sun's Sparc and many other platforms. Linux is also one of the first operating systems to natively work with Intel's 64-bit Itanium processor and AMD's upcoming 64-bit "Opteron" processor.
