ITS Help Desk Employment

We're Hiring!

The ITS Help Desk is currently hiring enthusiastic students that consider themselves resourceful, good problem solvers, and fast learners. We are looking for people willing to make at least a two year time commitment, who enjoy working with and helping people, and are ready to learn about cutting edge technology and valuable skills which will be useful in all future jobs.

What we do...

The ITS Help Desk provides computer support to the University of Iowa community over the phone, in person, and via email. We get calls from all over campus with questions that vary from "What is the number for Remote Access" to "How do I simultaneously select cells that are in different sheets of an Office XP Workbook?" to "How can I enable file sharing of folders over a network?" just to name a few. Our student staff comprises over half of the support team. Students have opportunities every day to be challenged, learn new things, help customers and co-workers with questions, and interact in an exciting atmosphere.

Students at the Help Desk are given the chance to perform software installations and security certifications on student computers, learn and test out new applications and operating systems, design web pages for internal and campus-wide use, and are exposed to the top technology available at the University of Iowa.

What your role would be...

The Help Desk currently has two primary roles for student employees. Help Desk Main Library consultants provide front-line support to University of Iowa students, faculty, staff, and guests at the Main Library Help Desk location. Help Desk Main Library consultants oversee and help maintain the Main Library computer lab, including laptop checkouts and printers, and assist customers with technical and University account issues (such as the Hawk ID, printing, e-mail, etc.).

Help Desk student consultants have the opportunity to do everything that the Help Desk does, including answering questions over the phone, by e-mail, and helping people who come in to the Help Desk with all their computer and University account needs. Help Desk student consultants also have the opportunity to participate in projects such as software testing, technical documentation, and computer imaging.

We will train you in the various areas that we support, and the knowledge we provide you will be practical and useful in the future. In return, we ask that you bring your knowledge, experience, opinions, resources and ideas about customer service, problem solving, and troubleshooting, and help us to provide the best computer support possible.

What we're looking for...

In general, we're looking for people who...
