Configuring WS_FTP to Access Network Shared Drives
WS_FTP is a File Transfer Protocol (FTP) program from Ipswitch for the Windows 98/NT/2000/Me/XP/2003/Vista platforms. Visit the ITS Software Services site to download the WS_FTP installer.
The FTP protocol provides reliable file transfer, but it fails to protect either user passwords or the data which is transferred. The solution is to combine FTP with SSL (Secure Socket Layers). This is the same SSL which is familiar to users of secure web sites and e-mail.
The University secure file transfer service is located on the host sftp.iowa.uiowa.edu. This server provides both SFTP service on port 22 as well as FTP+SSL on port 990.
To access University network shared drives with WS_FTP:
-
After installing the program, launch WS_FTP and choose the Connection Wizard button on the toolbar.
-
Enter a name for your site in the Site Name field and click the Next button.
-
Choose FTP/Implicit SSL as the Connection Type from the list and click the Next button.

-
Enter sftp.iowa.uiowa.edu in the Server Address entry field and click the Next button.
-
Enter your Hawk ID and password in the User Name and Password fields and click Next.
-
Verify the information you entered is correct and click the Finish button to connect to your site.

-
On the Non-Trusted Certificate window, choose the Trust this certificate option.
-
The base of the University file system is now displayed in the right hand pane. You can navigate to the desired shared folder to access files and transfer them to the computer you are working on. See the WS_FTP Features page for more information about the WS_FTP product.

Note: WS_FTP saves your connection information. The next time you launch WS_FTP, choose the Connect button, then select your site from the Site Manager window and press Connect again.

or setting up this software, please contact the ITS Help Desk.
