Windows XP Firewall

Windows XP has a built-in firewall. This can help raise the level of security for your computer when it is connected to the Internet.

  1. Select Start | Control Panel. Once you are inside the Control Panel, click on Network and Internet Connections.

  1. Click on Network Connections.

  1. Once you are in the Network Connections window, right-click on the connection that you want to protect (typically the Local Area Connection) and left-click on Properties, as shown below:

  1. Click on the Advanced tab, and click on the box to place a checkmark next to: Protect my computer and network...

  1. If you would like to set some advanced settings - such as opening a port for a server - click on the Settings button. Place a check in the box(es) next to the port(s) you wish to open. To add a new port, click the Add... button.

 

  1. When you are finished, click the OK button to return to the Control Panel.
