For the second time in the past year, the Mac operating system has been the target of widespread malware attack. (See Debunking the Myth Part 1 from May 2011.) A recent article from the Sophos Security Blog asks and answers the question “Are Macs safer than PCs?“, in light of the recent “Flashback” malware outbreak.
Part of securing your personal information and computer online means keeping your operating system up-to-date, regularly updating your antivirus and knowing how to spot malicious attempts to corrupt your computer or steal your information. The often repeated myth that Macs are safer than Windows computers just isn’t true, as many of the techniques used to infect machines these days rely on users installing the malware themselves, without realizing it is malicious software.
